Another element of a well-rounded exercise program is strength training, which also helps to build bone. Muscles, which are attached to bones by tendons, pull against bones when they contract. This action stimulates bone growth. Strengthening muscles throughout the body will also provide greater protection to bones.

Muscle strength improves by doing repetitions, or reps, of each exercise 8-10 times. This is known as a set. As the weeks progress, you can increase to 2 or 3 sets of each exercise. You can also add small weights to your routine. These can be purchased from many sports equipment stores.

Examples of strength-training exercises

  1. Back extension
  2. Abdominal tuck
  3. Side leg lift
  4. Arm curl
