Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

What does it mean if I have an abnormal Pap test?

woman2

Generally, an abnormal Pap test does not mean that you have cervical cancer and it is no reason to panic. Many abnormal Pap tests are caused by viral infections (such as HPV) or other infections (including yeast infections). Natural cell changes related to menopause could also cause an abnormal Pap test.14

When a Pap test is abnormal, health-care professionals may recommend another Pap test or a different test that shows if a woman is infected with HPV (known as an HPV DNA test). In some cases, a woman may be referred for colposcopy.15
