Living with heart failure
These simple suggestions will go a long way to making your life more comfortable:
Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor |
| Can I keep on working? You need to discuss this with your doctor. Usually, if you have mild heart failure and your work does not involve heavy labour, you should be able to continue to work. |
| Eat less salt Salt can cause your body to retain fluid. Read food labels salt is contained in many prepared foods. Choose "no sodium" or "low sodium" foods. (Sodium chloride is salt.) |
| Weigh yourself regularly Rapid weight gain may mean you are retaining too much water. You should talk to your doctor. |
Find time to rest With more severe symptoms, rest periods should be increased. Rest reduces the demand on the heart. |
| Exercise in moderation Walking, swimming, and cycling are good, but do not over exert yourself. Avoid exercises that cause shortness of breath or dizziness. Talk to your doctor about an exercise program. |
| Avoid constipation in order not to strain yourself. Include sufficient fiber in your diet. |
Limit alcohol and avoid cigarettes Excessive alcohol can be poisonous to the heart. Nicotine causes the blood vessels to narrow and therefore makes the heart work harder. If you have trouble quitting on your own, ask your doctor to suggest a program. |
| Sexual activity can be enjoyed If you feel anxious or if you have questions, talk openly with your doctor and partner. |
| Sleeping may be more comfortable if you prop your head up on a few pillows. |
