Living With Visual Difficulties

Welcome to "Living with Visual Difficulties". This section will provide tips on how to maximize safety and independence while learning to live with impaired vision. Our first feature covers ways to adapt the home to compensate for the loss of sight.

Outfitting The Home

The home can be adapted in many ways to promote the safety and independence of a person living with poor or diminishing vision. Not every suggestion is applicable in every case, but there are ideas here for people with different degrees of visual impairment, including total loss of sight. A few general principles apply throughout the home:

  • Maximize the use of color contrast.
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate lighting.
  • Maximize the use of other senses, particularly touch.
  • Focus on organization and memory.
