Local Perspective

Each research facility of Merck & Co., Inc. focuses on a different therapeutic area. Scientific research at the Merck Frosst Centre for Therapeutic Research in Montréal has in the past focused primarily on inflammatory and respiratory diseases, leading to the discovery, among others, of SINGULAIR® (montelukast sodium).

Research targets currently in the sights of the Merck Frosst research teams are:

  • Respiratory diseases (such as asthma) 
  • Inflammatory diseases (such as arthritis) 
  • Bone diseases (such as osteoporosis) 
  • Endocrine disorders (such as diabetes)

The Merck Frosst Centre for Therapeutic Research has five major departments:

  • Biochemistry / Molecular Biology 
  • Medicinal Chemistry 
  • Pharmacology 
  • Process Chemistry 
  • Pharmaceutical R&D

All researchers have access to an on-site Research Library. The Research Information Systems group provides general informatics user support and expertise in data analysis and high-performance computing.

Local R & D investment

The investment by Merck Frosst Canada Ltd. in R&D is one of the highest in Canada. Since 1989, R&D expenditures have increased 14.3% and the number of R&D personnel has doubled.
