Corporate Philanthropy Policy

Caring today for better tomorrow

The philanthropic outreach of Merck Frosst is guided by three strategic priorities: advance scientific knowledge and education, improve health care for Canadians, and support communities.

Advancing Scientific Knowledge and Education

As one of Canada’s leading research-based pharmaceutical companies, Merck Frosst supports specific science education initiatives aimed at encouraging students to pursue careers in the life sciences sector. The company also supports science fairs  to help students, teachers and parents get connected to science. At the university level, Merck Frosst offers student scholarships and other initiatives that reward excellence.

Once again, this year's support from Merck Frosst involved numerous prizes and bursaries awarded at various phases of the Science Fair. During each regional finals, Merck Frosst awarded the Merck Frosst Award, each accompanied by a $400 bursary, for experimental or design projects with a focus on the preservation and improvement of human health.  During the Super Expo-sciences Bell, Québec Final, held in Montreal in April, Merck Frosst gave a $1,000 bursary for the best experimental or design project with a focus on the preservation and improvement of human health.

Improving Health Care

Our overall goal is to improve the health and well-being of people everywhere through the discovery and development of innovative products that contribute to improving the quality of life of people. Merck Frosst believes that we have to go beyond this to improve the health of Canadians by supporting education programs aimed at disseminating and sharing medical and/or pharmacoeconomic information in the medical field. To provide information to patients about health and treatment options, Merck Frosst supports initiatives through collaborations with patient advocacy groups.

We also focus on turning cutting edge science into breakthrough medicines that address significant unmet needs by supporting university-based and independent centres engaged in research in the field of medicine, and that are aligned with our corporate objectives.

Support to Communities

We believe that an essential component of our corporate responsibility is to provide support to charitable or philanthropic organizations which benefit our society, from the local community, where Merck Frosst has a major presence, to the national level. As part of the Employee Giving Campaign, the company matches donations to three community organizations: West Island Community Shares, United Way/Centraide across Canada and the Merck Frosst Employee’s Charity Trust Fund.

When appropriate, assistance is provided in response to major disasters/medical emergencies. Merck Frosst, as a corporation, also provides funding and product support to address selected health care issues in Canada. Additionally, Merck Frosst, in partnership with Health Partners International, donates medicines and vaccines to attend to health care needs in developing countries.

Please note that we will evaluate requests for financial support that are aligned with our strategic priorities described in our Corporate Philanthropy Policy.
